Prototype rail heights vary from 2.8" (70 mm) in the lightest cases to 6.8" (172 mm) in the heaviest.  Read more about prototype rail here.

 

Bullhead track

Bullhead rail is available in HO/OO gauge code 75 and O gauge code 124 track.  Bullhead rail was installed in UK from the mid-19th to mid-20th century and is still found in older or less-used track and on heritage railways.  Flat-bottom rail was installed in the UK from mid-20th century onwards.
